very pleased to be releasing this one, st. herman of alaska, wonderworker of america, often considered in the orthodox church to be the patron saint of north america as a whole.
he was a russian aesthetic to came to alaska as a missionary. in this graphic you'll see scenes from his life. starting in the bottom left and coming up around clockwise, we have the monestaries and places he lived in russia, a portrait of one of his leaders from russia he was extremely devoted to, where he lived in alaska, an allusion to the virgin mary (he had a mirculous healing experience associated with the virgin), (top left now) one of his miracles where he held back a flood by placing an icon of the theotokos on the shore, the fiery bear is a reference to his claim that upon arriving in alaska he was tormented by demons that often took the shape of animals, where he lived, and the church and monastery that is now there today.
there are other details I put in that fit into his life story, for example in the bottom right is a shrine on the island where he lived today, top right is an image of one of the natives he knew there who was tortured and became a saint / martyr, top left are some of his relics, and in the bottom there's also an ermine, apparently he was close with some animals that lived there, one of which was an ermine.
i take my role as mystical illustrator seriously so, I didn't want to just throw this together, wanted to be respectful of the man and his legacy so I really dug in and did a lot of research for this one. he's also (loosely speaking) part of the "lineage" for someone I really like named seraphim rose so, there were a few reasons why I made this.
this one comes as a shirt and a print, and they both look awesome.
([READ THIS] a note on sizes: I used to advise on sizes but there is just too much variation between people. I'm about 6'2, and skinny, and I wear a medium. The medium is pretty large, but for some guys it's not big enough. Honestly the only way to make a safe bet is to check out the sizing guide below and measure yourself or one of your shirts that you have that fits you well. I can't do returns because they're all made to order so, it's not like I have a ton of them all here at the studio. If you want to order a bunch I'd probably advise getting one and then seeing how it fits and then going for more.
On my end, the data I can give you is that after advising that if you're torn between the medium and the large to get a medium, it worked out for most people, but some guys have bigger arms or actually needed the large so, like I said, basically gotta measure yourself.)
